From acantho- (“thorn, spike”, from Ancient Greek ἄκᾰνθος (ákănthos)) + Ancient Greek ῥῠ́γχος (rhŭ́nkhos, “snout, beak, bill”). Coined by English ornithologist John Gould in 1837.
