From Ancient Greek ἀκαρής (akarḗs, “very short”) +‎ Ancient Greek σπορᾱ́ (sporā́, “seed, spore”). Coined by Italian paleobotanist & lichenologist Abramo Bartolommeo Massalongo in 1852.
