Usage notes
Bohai Sea is an informal calque of the Chinese name for the gulf, unrecognized by the still active 3rd edition of the Limits of Oceans and Seas (IHO-23), which considers its waters part of the Yellow Sea. The draft 4th edition officially recognizes it—still as a region of the Yellow Sea—under the less redundant name Bo Hai but remains unratified.
