Simple stories were read to the enchanted little listeners, who never wearied of hearing them, - tales of how a Christmas elf, a merry little being, rode in his fairy chariot over the tops of houses, and laden with presents, could pass unsoiled down sooty chimneys, and place the pretty gifts under the pillows of good children without their knowing it, or slip them into old stockings which might be hanging at the sides of little beds.
