By surface analysis, dendro- (“tree”, from Ancient Greek δένδρον (déndron)) +‎ Ancient Greek ὀφῐ́δῐον (ophĭ́dĭon, “little snake”). Coined by Austrian zoologist Leopold Fitzinger in 1843.
