Etymology

Coined by Carl Linnaeus as if Ancient Greek γλυκίνη (glukínē) after Ancient Greek γλυκύς (glukús, sweet) because of one member of the genus having a sweet root.

In scientific Latin, the genius name is rendered as a feminine noun glycinē (as opposed to amino acid glycine which is rendered as a neuter noun glycinum). (This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium. Particularly: “suffix? source?”)
