By surface analysis, Haus (“house”) +‎ suchen (“to search”) +‎ -ung (“-ing”). Formally from a rare Middle High German hūssuochunge, which is only attested in the slightly different sense “trespassing, unlawful entry”. For “house-search”, the older form is Middle High German hūssuoche, from Old High German hūssuohha. Compare Dutch huiszoeking.
