Etymology

From hypo- (below, under, from Ancient Greek ὑπο- (hupo-)) +‎ Ancient Greek τρᾱχῠ́ς (trākhŭ́s, jagged, spiky, prickly) +‎ -ina (diminutive suffix). Coined by American lichenologist Mason Ellsworth Hale in 1974.
