Etymology

From hypo- (“below, under”, from Ancient Greek ὑπο- (hupo-)) +‎ Ancient Greek τρᾱχῠ́ς (trākhŭ́s, “jagged, spiky, prickly”) +‎ -ina (diminutive suffix). Coined by American lichenologist Mason Ellsworth Hale in 1974.
