Kerivoula

Translingual

Etymology

By surface analysis, Greek κερί (kerí, wax) +‎ Greek βούλα (voúla, seal, stamp), literally wax stamp; wax seal. Coined by British zoologist John Edward Gray in 1842.

This term is seemingly constructed using direct transcription of Modern Greek rather than traditional Latinate or other transliterations of Ancient Greek terms, which is unusual for taxonomic names. A construction of the same taxonomic name using Latinate transliteration (and using the Ancient Greek equivalent terms) would be *Ceriobulla.

Proper noun

Kerivoula f

  1. A taxonomic genus within the family Vespertilionidae – woolly bats.
