Etymology

From Azerbaijani Xankəndi (village of the khan), referring to the settlement established in the 18th century as a residence for the khans of the Karabakh Khanate, particularly under the rule of Panah Ali Khan and his successors. Possibly via Russian Ханкенди (Xankendi).
