From Ancient Greek λύκος (lúkos, wolf) +‎ Latin -ōsa (adjectival suffix, feminine nominalized). Coined by French zoologist and entomologist Pierre André Latreille in 1804.

Many genera of the Lycosidae are modelled after this etymology.
