By surface analysis, mount +‎ Erebus. From Latin Erebus (Greek personification of darkness) and Ancient Greek Ἔρεβος / ἔρεβος (Érebos / érebos, personification of darkness; darkness), Proto-Indo-European *h₁régʷos (darkness), and Proto-Indo-European *h₁regʷ- (to be dark).
