Borrowed from Mandarin 北京 (Běijīng), specifically the Nanking court dialect from before the modern palatalization of [k] to [t͡ɕ].[1] Doublet of Beijing. Compare Spanish Pekín, French Pékin, English Peking, Dutch Peking.
