Inherited from Proto-West Germanic *biliwiti, from a compound of Proto-Germanic *biliz (kind, gentle) + *witją (wit). Equivalent to *bili (kind, fair) +‎ witti (wit).

Near-cognates include Old English bilewit (innocent, calm) and Old Saxon biliwit (mild), both adjectives (from similar Proto-West Germanic *biliwit-).
