Inherited from Proto-West Germanic *hagatussjā, from Proto-Germanic *hagatusjō, from *hagô (“enclosure; pasture”) + *tusjō (“witch, demon”). Compare Old English hæġtesse and Old High German hagzissa (whence also loaned Modern Dutch heks (“witch”)).
