From earlier *warwás, inherited from Proto-Indo-European *wor-wos (black), from *wer- (to burn). By surface analysis, *warwás +‎ *-nas.

Etymology 2

From an adjective *warnás < *warwás (black), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *wer- (to burn), the same source as *wárˀnāˀ (crow). Cognate with Tocharian B wrauña (crow), possibly Proto-Celtic *branos (crow, raven).
