Reconstruction:Proto-Finnic/mees

Proto-Finnic

Etymology

Probably borrowed from Proto-Germanic *mēgaz (male in-law). This theory requires an earlier form *meeɣäs : *meeɣähe-, which was elided into the actually encountered *mees : *meehe-.[1] The word is an innovation replacing Proto-Uralic *koje (man).

Relationship to the Proto-Uralic root *mańćɜ has also been proposed, reflected in the ethnonyms Mansi and Magyar, of Indo-Iranian origin (compare Proto-Balto-Slavic *mangjás (man), Sanskrit मनुष्य (manuṣyá)); however, this comparison is phonetically untenable.

Noun

*mees[2]

  1. man, male
  2. husband
