Reconstruction:Proto-Germanic/klebô
Proto-Germanic
Etymology
Of uncertain origin. Traditionally considered a borrowing from Latin clībanus (“baking vessel; oven”), with semantic development "oven" > "heatable room",[1] though this is semantically doubtful.[2] Note that a relation to *kleubaną (“to split, cleave”) is semantically appealing, though phonetically difficult.
