From Proto-Ob-Ugric *sīnɣɜ, from Proto-Uralic *śänä.

So far only found in Cyrillic dictionaries in Vakh Khanty (with meaning лохань березового нароста) and Shuryshkar Khanty where it means growth on a tree (Rus. нарост на дереве). Konda Khanty саны is a transcription from sǡnɜ, while Yugan Khanty is from sȧ̀nǝɣ‘.

  • Northern Khanty: сан (san) (Shuryshkar)
  • Eastern Khanty: сӓнӛɣ (sänjəɣ) (Vakh), сӓнәӽ (sänəḥ) (Yugan)
  • Southern Khanty: сӓны (säny) (Konda)
