Uncertain. According to Starostin and Nikolaev, it may be a borrowing from Tsezian (cf. Tsez гулу (gulu, “stallion”), Hinukh гулу (gulu, “stallion; id.”)). According to Schulze, it is a borrowing from an unknown source, based on Proto-Iranian *gawraH (cf. Persian گور (gōr, “wild ass, onager; zebra”)).
