Etymology

Uncertain. According to Starostin and Nikolaev, it may be a borrowing from Tsezian (cf. Tsez гулу (gulu, stallion), Hinukh гулу (gulu, stallion; id.)). According to Schulze, it is a borrowing from an unknown source, based on Proto-Iranian *gawraH (cf. Persian گور (gōr, wild ass, onager; zebra)).
