Proto-Tungusic

Alternative reconstructions

  • *umūkta (per EDAL)

Etymology

Either from *umu (nest) or *umū- (to lay eggs) +‎ *-kta. Compare also *umun (nest, hollow).

Compared to Proto-Mongolic *ömdexen (egg) and Proto-Turkic *yumurtka (egg) by Tenišev and Doerfer. However such comparisons are likely a coincidence -and not relevant anymore- and not accepted by mainstream academia.

Tenišev proposes an earlier *umurkta.[1]

Noun

*umukta

  1. egg
