Reconstruction:Proto-Uralic/śeppä
Proto-Uralic
Reconstruction
The word can only be reliably reconstructed to Finno-Samic/Western Uralic. Hungarian szép (“beautiful”) is not a certain descendant due to the semantic gap, and an alternative Turkic etymology for it has also been proposed.[1] Aikio (2020), however, points out that numerous semantic parallels can be found e.g. Old English prættig (“wily, crafty, skillful”) > English pretty, Proto-Germanic *kōniz (“clever, skillful”) > Danish køn (“pretty, good-looking”), Proto-Finnic *käpedä (“brisk, swift”) > Ingrian käppiä (“beautiful”) and that both "skilled" and "beautiful" might reflect some unattested third meaning such as "good".[2]
