Etymology

Composed of *-χeg (to call) +‎ *-ja (nominalizer suffix).

Compared to Proto-Athabaskan *uˑ-žeˑ (name)[2][3], Navajo ázhiʼ (name), Eyak wə-šeh (name) and Tlingit saa (name).[4] Also note that both Yeniseian and Na-Dené languages derive this gloss identically, with a root verb with the meaning "to call" appended by a general nominalizing suffix.

Noun

*χegja (plural *χeg-ja-n)

  1. (sociology) name, given name
