(plant genus): Coined by French botanist Antoine Laurent de Jussieu in 1789. So named due to the stripe patterns on some individuals' petals, reminiscent of those of a tiger's fur. Compare Classical Nahuatl oceloxochitl (literally “jaguar flower”), from the words of Classical Nahuatl ocelotl (“jaguar”) and Classical Nahuatl xochitl (“flower”).
(butterfly genus): Coined by German entomologist Jacob Hübner in 1819. So called due to the orange-and-black stripe patterns found on Tigridia acesta's wings.
