Etymology
From Tritonia + -opsis (“resembling”, Ancient Greek ὄψις (ópsis)). "Tritonia" is both a botanical genus of the Iridaceae and a zoological genus of the Tritoniidae.

- (sense 2): Coined by South African botanist, botanical collector, and curator and scientific illustrator Harriet Margaret Louisa Bolus in 1929.
