From Proto-Somaloid *waaq-, from Proto-East Cushitic *waaḳ ("sky god"),[1] from Proto-Cushitic *waaḳ- (to rise).

Cognate with Rendille wakh, Baiso waa, Arbore waaq/waak/waka, Daasanach waag, El Molo waak, Oromo waaqa, Khonso waaqa, Burji waac'i, Hadiyya waa'a, Gawwada waako, Tsamai wa'ko.
