Inherited from Medieval Tashelhit آغاراس (aɣaras, “path, way”).

No cognates are found across Berber languages except for Zenaga täʷraš (“road”), Mohand Akli Haddadou (2006) linked it to Proto-Berber *ɣ-r-s (“to slit the throat of, to cut”), compare Tashelhit ɣrs (“to slit the throat of, to cut”) and Tashelhit tiɣrsi (“Eid sacrifice”). however, this connection seems unreasonable.

Perhaps from Latin cursus (“course, passage, way”), compare Catalan curs (“course, route, path”), and Old French cours (“path, route”), compare also Medieval Latin carraria (“wide road”).
