Etymology
Uncertain. Inherited from Proto-Berber *a-ɣyul (“donkey”), possibly derived from Proto-Berber *ɣ-w-l (“related to black and brown colors”), or perhaps from Latin equuleus (“colt, foal”).
Compare Tuareg iɣwal (“to be brown, to be tanned”), Northern Saharan Berber sseɣwel, aɣeggal (“to blacken, black”), Tachawit ɣuwel (“to be black”), Tarifit aɣyuř (“donkey”) and Kabyle aɣyul (“donkey”).
