Borrowed from Old Church Slavonic априль (aprilĭ), from Byzantine Greek Ἀπρίλιος (Aprílios), from Latin (mensis) Aprīlis. Introduced through the Orthodox Church and mostly supplanted the older popular inherited form prier.
