From bando, an earlier variant form of ban (“public proclamation, edict”), perhaps from Frankish *ban, *bann, from Proto-West Germanic *bannan, from Proto-Germanic *bannaną (“to proclaim”). Maybe influenced from Gothic 𐌱𐌰𐌽𐌳𐍅𐌾𐌰𐌽 (bandwjan), meaning "to signal".
