cirikokë
Albanian
Alternative forms
Etymology
From ciri- (or its variant cili- for some alternative forms) + kokë, where the first part is derived from cër as a metathesis of stër- in stërqokë, or even from cirkë (“droplet”). The second part points to qok (“scops owl”), influenced by kokë perhaps due to the grayish color on birds head and neck.[1]
Less likely, but proposed, an onomatopoeic formation due to the bird's caw, krrok in Albanian.[2]
