Etymology

From Proto-West Germanic *alljan, from Proto-Germanic *aljaną (zeal, strength). As an element in proper nouns only in Upper High German from the 8th C.. The regular onomastic base from this root is Proto-West Germanic *alljā (Old High German ella), Proto-Germanic *aljǭ (perseverance, passion, rival, lover) (ōn-stem), and the Upper German compound form ellan- may simply be the oblique case, and not directly from *alljan.
