ethnisch
German
Etymology
Chiefly since 19th century, from Ancient Greek ἔθνος (éthnos) + -isch, after ἐθνικός (ethnikós) and their descendants Latin ethnicus, French ethnique.
The pronunciation with /eː/ was probably influenced by the fact that, until 1901, th often indicated the length of adjacent vowels (like Muth, That etc.).
Pronunciation
Adjective
ethnisch (strong nominative masculine singular ethnischer, not comparable)
- ethnic (of an ethnic group)
Usage notes
- The German word does not have the sense “foreign, exotic”, except as a rare anglicism. Instead use exotisch, ausländisch, international.
Declension
Positive forms of ethnisch (uncomparable)
