Etymology

A continuation of forms of Old English ēage (“eye”) such as ēagenes (genitive singular), ēagenum (dative plural) where pleonastic case endings have been added to ēagan, rebuilt or reinterpreted as eyen (“eyes”) +‎ -en (plural suffix). See eyen for forms such as eyne where this rebuilding has not occured.
