Borrowed from Javanese gosong (“burnt, scorched”), from Old Javanese gĕsĕṅ (“burnt, destroyed by fire; burning, on fire, fiery, glowing, radiant, bright”), probably ultimately from Proto-Mon-Khmer *cɔŋ (“to set light”).
