Borrowed from Javanese gosong (burnt, scorched), from Old Javanese gĕsĕṅ (burnt, destroyed by fire; burning, on fire, fiery, glowing, radiant, bright), probably ultimately from Proto-Mon-Khmer *cɔŋ (to set light).
