Etymology

Probably from Frankish *wahtōn, *wahtjan (to watch, guard). Cognate with French guetter (to watch) and Occitan gachar.

guetar (first-person singular indicative present gueto, past participle guetáu)

  1. to gather, collect (especially chestnuts and hazelnuts in a seasonal gueta)
    Synonyms: recoyer, apañar
