From Proto-Central-Eastern Polynesian *seru "scratch the earth; scrape; dig". Cognate with Tahitian heru (“scratch the earth”).
Perhaps ultimately derived from Proto-Polynesian *selu (“comb”), from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *saʀu (“comb”).
