From Proto-Somaloid *ilim, ultimately from Proto-Cushitic *ʔilmuʔ (“tear”), literally 'watery eyes', equivalent to Proto-Cushitic *ʔil- (“eye”) + *mVʔ- (“water”), derived from Proto-Afroasiatic; compare with Egyptian rmj. Cognate with Aweer ilme (plural), Rendille ilim, Waata ilmaani (plural), Dahalo ilima, Aasax elelema, Blin ereñw, Beja mile.[1]
