Etymology

Calque of Japanese リチウムイオン電池 (richiumu ion denchi). Lithium-ion batteries were first commercially produced and marketed in Japan.[1]

  1. (electrochemistry, electronics) A form of rechargeable battery containing lithium compounds, but not elemental lithium, used in many consumer electronics devices.
    • 2019 October 23, Rail, pages 26–27:
      The new trams will join an existing 21-strong Urbos tram fleet in Birmingham. The latter were delivered in 2012, and last year were fitted with Greentech on-board energy storage using lithium-ion batteries to enable catenary-free running. The new trams will have similar equipment.
