From Proto-Algonquian *maškihkyiwaᐧpowi (herbal infusion). By surface analysis, mashkikiw- (medicine, drug) +‎ -aaboo (liquid). Cognate with Cree ᒪᐢᑭᐦᑭᐊᐧᐱᕀ (maskihkiaypiy, medicine water, potion, tea), Fox mashishkiwâpowi (tea), Menominee maskīhkiwapoh (tea).
