Etymology
From Proto-Albanian *pēpli, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)pel- (“to sliver, split off, splinter off”), allegedly also the source of Old English *popel (“pebble”). Cognate to (Hes.) Ancient Greek πέλλα λίθος (pélla líthos) and Old High German Fels (“rock”). An Albanian formation with (broken) reduplication.
