Etymology

From Proto-Albanian *pēpli, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)pel- (to sliver, split off, splinter off), allegedly also the source of Old English *popel (pebble). Cognate to (Hes.) Ancient Greek πέλλα λίθος (pélla líthos) and Old High German Fels (rock). An Albanian formation with (broken) reduplication.
