Etymology

From Proto-East Cushitic *ḳawʕ- ("sound of thunder"). Cognate with Khonso qawweeta (“Amhara”), Burji qa'wee, Gedeo qawh (“Amhara”), Sidamo qawwe. The Amhara are referred to as such on account of their rifles.
