Etymology
From Ancient Greek ῥόδον (rhódon, “rose”) + Ancient Greek γᾰστήρ (găstḗr, “belly”). Doublet of Rhodogaster. Compare Rhodogastria.
Coined by German ornithologist and herpetologist Hermann Schlegel in 1837 with the description of Liophidium rhodogaster, a species of snake (pictured).

Usage notes
