From Proto-Tai *krwɯːᴬ (ear).[1] The initial *k- may have been a prefix that was lost early on in dialects that have reflexes with tone A2[2] such as Zhuang rwz [ɣɯᴬ²]. Cognate with Zhuang rwz.

In Southwestern Tai, cognate with Thai หู (hǔu), Northern Thai ᩉᩪ, Lao ຫູ (), ᦠᦴ (ḣuu), Shan ႁူ (hǔu), Tai Dam ꪬꪴ, Tai Nüa ᥞᥧᥴ (), Aiton ꩭူ (), Ahom 𑜍𑜥 ().
