ruột rà
Vietnamese
Etymology
From ruột (“blood ties”) + rà, a fossil word.
This term was attested in Phật thuyết đại báo phụ mẫu ân trọng kinh (佛說大報父母恩重經), with the second element written as 口⿰𪜀, composed of 口 + 𪜀 (a simplified form of 羅 (MC la), modern SV: la). The element 口 (khẩu) here was unlikely phonetic as Vietnamese ‹r-› is not known to come from ancestral *Cr- (see Shimizu, 2015 & 2018).
