shee shee

English

Etymology

Borrowed from Cantonese 𭉝𭉝 (syu4 syu4-2) from a dialect or older stage of Cantonese (during the late 19th and early 20th centuries) where the initials of both syllables are realised as [ɕ], which the term itself originated as an onomatopoeia. Alternatively, the initial sh sounds may be representative of the palatalization of /s/ before /iː, yː/ in modern standard Cantonese. Compare Portuguese xixi, and Hawaiian English shishi.
