standard temperature and pressure (countable and uncountable, plural standard temperatures and pressures)

  1. (physics, chemistry) One of various standard sets of conditions for experimental measurements used to aid reproducibility. Abbreviated as STP. Often elliptically called standard conditions.
  2. (physics, chemistry, strictly) The international, standard conditions used by the IUPAC to aid reproducibility; a temperature of 0 °C (273.15 K) and a pressure of 1 bar (100 kPa). Abbreviated as STP. Often elliptically called standard conditions.

Usage notes

Different organizations use different definitions for standard reference conditions. In particular, the reference temperature can be 0, 15, 20, 22, or 25 degrees Celsius. The reference pressure can range from 100 to 101.6 kPa.
