Inherited from Proto-Athabaskan *tʼe̓ˑš ~ *tʼeˑtšʼ ~ *tʼuˑtšʼ (“charcoal”).[1] Distantly cognate with Ket дуʼ (duˀ, “smoke, soot”).
This term is also related to the root -TʼÉÉZH (“to blacken with charcoal”).
