Inherited from Proto-Athabaskan *tʼe̓ˑš ~ *tʼeˑtšʼ ~ *tʼuˑtšʼ (charcoal).[1] Distantly cognate with Ket дуʼ (duˀ, smoke, soot).

This term is also related to the root -TʼÉÉZH (to blacken with charcoal).
