Inherited from Medieval Tashelhit تاڢوكت (tafukt, “sun”), from Proto-Berber *taʔfukt (“sun, sunlight”)[1], compare Zenaga toʔfukt (“sun”), Central Atlas Tamazight ⵜⴰⴼⵓⵛⵜ (tafuct, “sun”), Ghadames tōfet (“sun, sunlight”), Northern Saharan Berber tfuyt (“sun”), and Tuareg tăfukt (“sun”); likely derived from Proto-Berber *f-w (“to be bright, to shine”), compare Medieval Tashelhit توڢاوت (“light”), Northern Saharan Berber ifaw (“to be clear”), Siwi tafiyt (“morning”), Tashelhit faw (“to shine”), Tuareg tafawt (“illumination”) and Proto-Berber *asăf (“day”); ultimately from Proto-Afroasiatic *p-' (“to shine”), compare Wolaytta fo"-ouwa (“light”), Egyptian sšp (“to shine”), Akkadian (w)apû (“to be visible”), Fyer fuu (“to be beautiful”), and Zayse-Zergulla pò (“light”).
