tessenek
Hungarian
Etymology
tetszik + -jenek (personal suffix)
Pronunciation
- IPA(key): [ˈtɛʃːɛnɛk]
- Hyphenation: tes‧se‧nek
Verb
tessenek
- alternative form of tetsszenek, third-person plural subjunctive present indefinite of tetszik
- (auxiliary, with a verb in the infinitive, plural addressee) please, would you?, kindly (in requests, esp. towards elderly people, clients, or by children towards adults, used as a polite alternative to the imperative mood)
- Tessenek helyet foglalni! ― Would you [guests] please take a seat?
Usage notes
Since the subject of tetszik is technically the action, not the person whom it pleases (see Usage notes there), a specified plural addressee would assume the dative case (-nak/-nek) with the singular form of the auxiliary verb:
- Tessék a hölgyeknek beljebb fáradni! ― Would the ladies please come in?
